How large is a camera sensor?

From 1/2.3-inch to medium format, compare true width, height, area, and proportions behind each name.

1/N inch is not the actual diagonal

The name comes from early video camera tube formats. The real diagonal is often about two-thirds of the nominal value, so it cannot be converted directly.

Millimeter dimensions are more reliable

Width times height gives area; the square root of width squared plus height squared gives diagonal. Every rectangle uses the same calculation.
